Public Land for Public Good Miami (PLPG) is a place-based, coalition-driven initiative seeking to ensure proactive stewardship of public land use and disposition that centers on community. We are promoting community engagement with local stakeholders through a transparent and accountable process that creates and preserves greater accessibility, sustainability, and equity. We envision a Miami-Dade County where public land (1) benefits all residents, (2) reflects the community’s will, and (3) inspires harmony between environment and people.

    What we stand for

    Development on public land should:

        • Prioritize long-term public benefits over short-term speculative profits
        • Center the needs of low and moderate-income communities, especially historically impacted neighborhoods
        • Promote walkable, transit-rich communities where everyone has easy access to jobs, green space, schools, grocery stores, and health care
        • Ensure local stakeholders have a right to remain in the communities they’ve built, and eliminate displacement
        • Create deeply affordable housing to stabilize, diversify and enrich our communities
        • Promote climate resilience, environmental sustainability and utility justice

    Decisions regarding public land must:

        • Provide transparent, accessible and accountable legislative, administrative & community engagement processes
        • Be guided by a comprehensive strategy to ensure equitable access to public land.
        • Empower community stakeholders, including low-income homeowners, renters, and small business owners, with decision-making roles in what happens in their neighborhoods.
        • Intentionally include local community organizations, businesses and institutions as partners in development, implementation & monitoring
        • Recognize the importance of adaptability & continue to shift as the environment shifts

    What We Strive For

Supporting local community organizing and engagement efforts. We believe that those closest to the problems are experts in the solutions. We advise and support local groups who are doing base-building, organizing and other engagement work in their communities.

Creating a space where local groups can share strategy. We foster collaborations to support and advance their local campaigns. Different communities often have similar struggles, and PLPG facilitates connection and knowledge-sharing that make local fights stronger.

Collectively advocating for structural reforms. We pursue legislative, administrative, and budgetary changes at the city and county level that help to center community needs in all decisions about public land.
